Although Petit, about 1743, suggested with wonderful foresight that gallstones should be removed by operation, it was not till within the last twenty years that the surgery of the gall-bladder and its ducts made any appreciable advance. It is not, therefore, surprising that the knowledge of what can be effected by timely interference is scarcely as widely known as the subject deserves.
